Developing a foolproof strategy on how to teach colors to toddlers can be an exhilarating yet daunting task. With a suitable approach paired with amusing activities, it can be made easy to educate children about colors. Below, I’ll share some of the color activities I’ve discovered to work wonderfully.

#1 Color Matching Activities
Color-matching activities are a great way to help identify colors and develop their visual discrimination skills.
“I Spy” Game
- I gather a variety of items in different colors, such as fruits, vegetables, or building blocks.
- Then, I ask my toddler to find items that match objects by color.
- This activity is a fun way to reinforce color recognition and vocabulary.
Color Scavenger Hunt
- I choose a few colors, gather items of each color, hide them around the house or yard, and encourage my toddler to find one color by one.
- When she finds an item of the right color, we always celebrate her success and move on to the next color.
- It’s a fun and interactive activity that also encourages exploration and observation.
#2 Color Sorting Activities
Sorting activities are an excellent way to help children develop their math skills and fine motor skills.
Button Sorting Game
- Give kids a pile of buttons in many colors and ask them to sort them by color.
- This activity helps children develop their color sorting and counting skills.
Color Wheel Game
- Draw a large circle on a piece of paper and divide it into sections for each color of the rainbow.
- Then, give your toddler a pile of items in different colors and ask them to sort them into the appropriate section of the color wheel.
